Stop motion videos

Sometimes random ideas just pop up in my head. Depending on how i’m feeling or how busy I am I either park these for another day or just run with them to see if it takes me anywhere, on this occasion, I couldn’t stop! I had an idea to try and combine things I like doing into one creative project. I also like making beats on samplers, the Akai MPC 2000xl and live 2. I have made many of these over the years that just get filed away.

The initial idea was basically an octopus working on many things at once and somehow using some music in the project. I decided this could work as a stop motion video if I could make the model, although I’d never really done anything like this before! This led to me working with wire, clay, plasticine, acrylic paints to create the model of the octopus and then things just developed from there! I then made some other videos from there.

What started off as a bit of fun soon turned to slight frustration once I started to understand how important good lighting, timing with music and not accidentally moving other objects are during the process! I now have an extra found respect for the work that goes into high quality stop motion animation! I will be doing more and hopefully get a better set up.

I’ve added some photos below to show how things were made and the final videos. I got so into them I created a few others too!

Starting off with wire, polystyrene and air dry clay, I constructed the octopus model.

I made a sort of rotating base to give the model movement

The head was made of air dry clay but used plasticine for the legs to allow them to move.

Once dry I painted the head and tried to match to the plasticine as much as possible.

This led to another video with a few more things going on. I used bits I found around the house.

Then I created a band!

This guy was created from bits of wood, moss and leafs found in the garden. Also a door handle for his head. I then had the idea to make the video of him being chased by the police in the woods like some mutant wood creature.
